Why Do EA888 Timing Chains Wear?

Despite commonly being referred to as a chain “stretching”, the issue is generally accumulated wear within the chain's pins, bushes and mating components. This effectively increases the overall length of the chain.

As this wear increases, the tensioner has to compensate for progressively greater movement.

The tensioner maintains the correct tension within the timing-chain system.

Wear, incorrect operation or reaching the limits of its available adjustment can allow excessive chain movement. Earlier generations of the EA888 are particularly well known for timing-chain and tensioner concerns.

The timing chain runs against guide rails which control its movement. These components can wear or deteriorate with age, mileage and operating conditions.
