The timing chain is one of the most important components in your engine, responsible for synchronising the crankshaft and camshaft. This ensures the engine’s intake and exhaust valves open and close at precisely the right moment in relation to the pistons, allowing the engine to run efficiently and reliably.

Although commonly referred to as “timing chain stretch”, the chain does not actually stretch. Instead, it gradually elongates over time due to wear within the chain’s pins, rollers, and links.

The most common causes of timing chain elongation are:

Natural Wear and Tear
Timing chains are designed to be durable, but they do not last forever. As mileage increases, wear occurs throughout the chain and timing system components, eventually affecting engine timing and performance.

Poor Lubrication and Extended Service Intervals
Engine oil is essential for protecting the timing chain and associated components. Over time, oil becomes contaminated with fuel, carbon deposits, dirt, and microscopic metal particles. This reduces its lubricating properties and accelerates wear throughout the timing system. Regular oil changes are crucial to maintaining the health of the engine.
