The timing chain is one of the most important components in your engine. It synchronises the crankshaft and camshafts, ensuring the engine's valves operate at precisely the correct time in relation to the pistons.

Although commonly described as “timing chain stretch”, the chain doesn't physically stretch. Instead, gradual wear within the chain's pins, links and other components effectively increases its overall length. As this wear progresses, engine timing can move outside its intended range.

What Causes Timing Chain Wear?

Extended service intervals, incorrect specification oil or running with a low oil level can accelerate wear within the timing system. Regular servicing with the correct manufacturer-specified oil can therefore play an important role in protecting the engine.
