• A rattling or ticking noise from the front of the engine, most noticeable on cold start-up

• In advanced cases, the engine fails to start

What causes TCe timing chain failure?

As with the closely-related Nissan DIG-T engine, the hydraulic chain tensioner is the usual point of failure — wear here allows the chain to develop slack over time, which is what produces the characteristic rattle. Continued driving with a worn tensioner increases the risk of the chain jumping timing, which can cause much more serious engine damage.
