1.2 PureTech Wet Belt Replacement

The 1.2 PureTech's wet belt is one of the most widely reported timing failures on the road today. If it hasn't been replaced, it's a question of when, not if — we'd rather see your car before it becomes a breakdown.

Which vehicles does this cover?

The 1.2-litre PureTech three-cylinder turbo petrol engine has been used extensively across the PSA/Stellantis group since around 2014. If your vehicle is listed below, this is very likely the correct service.

Peugeot 208 / 2008 / 308 / 3008 / 50081.2 PureTech
Citroën C3 / C3 Aircross / C4 / C4 Cactus1.2 PureTech
Vauxhall Corsa / Crossland / Mokka / Grandland / Astra1.2 Turbo (PureTech)
DS 3 / DS 4 / DS 71.2 PureTech

Why the PureTech wet belt fails

The PureTech's timing belt runs inside the engine, immersed in oil rather than sitting externally like a conventional cambelt. On affected vehicles, the belt material has been found to degrade over time, particularly where oil changes have been infrequent or the wrong specification of oil has been used. As the belt breaks down, fragments circulate through the oil system and can block the oil pump pickup — starving the engine of lubrication and causing catastrophic damage that's far more serious, and expensive, than the belt itself.

Because of how widely reported this issue is, we'd strongly recommend having the belt checked or replaced preventatively if you're not certain of its history — regardless of whether you've noticed any symptoms yet.

Signs of a failing wet belt

  • A rattling or whining noise from the front of the engine
  • Low oil pressure warning lights
  • Engine management light or misfire
  • In many cases, sudden failure with no prior warning at all

Our replacement process

  1. Confirmation of your exact engine and belt specification from your registration.
  2. Fixed quote confirmed before any work begins.
  3. Wet belt, tensioner and associated seals replaced with correctly specified components.
  4. Full oil system flush to remove any belt debris already in circulation.
  5. Oil and filter change with the correct specification oil.
  6. Road test and final quality check before collection.
