Blocked Oil Pickup

This is the failure mode that turns a wet belt problem into a much bigger engine problem — and it's why we take belt condition so seriously.

How it happens

The oil pickup — sometimes called the oil strainer — sits at the bottom of the sump and draws oil into the pump to be circulated around the engine. As a wet belt deteriorates, fragments of rubber and fibre shed into the surrounding oil. Over time, enough debris can accumulate at the pickup's fine mesh screen to partially or fully block it.

Why this is so serious

  • A blocked pickup restricts oil flow to the pump, reducing oil pressure throughout the engine
  • Bearings, the crankshaft and camshafts rely on constant oil pressure — starvation causes rapid wear or seizure
  • This can happen quickly once blockage reaches a critical point, sometimes with very little warning

What we do about it

Whenever we replace a wet belt, we check the oil pickup and sump for debris and carry out a full oil system flush as standard — not an optional extra. If a pickup blockage has already caused damage, we'll identify the extent of it and give you an honest, fixed quote for what's actually needed, rather than just replacing the belt and hoping for the best.
