What the solenoid does
The camshaft solenoid is an electronically controlled valve that regulates oil flow into the VVT unit, which is what allows the engine control module to advance or retard cam timing as needed. It's a relatively small, inexpensive part — but a failure here can produce symptoms that look identical to more serious chain or sprocket wear.
Common symptoms
- Engine management light with a specific camshaft actuator/solenoid fault code
- Rattling noise, particularly if the solenoid is clogged with sludge from infrequent oil changes
- Reduced power or a rough idle as cam timing drifts out of its intended range
Why it's worth checking first
Because solenoid faults are far cheaper to put right than a timing chain, it's always worth ruling this out before assuming the worst. Sludge build-up from poor oil maintenance is a common contributing factor, which is another reason regular servicing matters — it's often the difference between a simple solenoid clean or replacement and a much larger repair.
