Signs your DIG-T timing chain needs attention

What causes DIG-T timing chain failure?

As with many small turbocharged engines, the hydraulic chain tensioner is the usual point of failure — wear here allows the chain to develop slack over time, which is what produces the characteristic rattle. Continued driving with a worn tensioner increases the risk of the chain jumping timing, which can cause much more serious engine damage.
