What the code means
P0016 is a generic OBD-II code for "Crankshaft Position — Camshaft Position Correlation" on Bank 1. In plain terms, the engine control module has detected that the relationship between crankshaft position and camshaft position doesn't match what it expects — the two aren't as precisely synchronised as they should be.
What usually causes it
- Timing chain stretch or slack, most often from a worn tensioner
- A worn or failing VVT (variable valve timing) solenoid or sprocket
- Low oil pressure or contaminated oil affecting VVT operation
- Less commonly, a faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor
Why a proper diagnosis matters here
Because several different faults can trigger the same code, clearing it or replacing a sensor without understanding the underlying cause often means the light comes straight back — or worse, masks a genuine timing chain problem that gets worse in the meantime. We start with a proper diagnostic to identify the actual cause before recommending any repair.
