What actually happens when a chain snaps
The timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in perfect synchronisation, controlling exactly when each valve opens and closes relative to piston position. If the chain snaps while the engine is running, that synchronisation is lost instantly. On the vast majority of modern engines — which are "interference" designs, meaning the pistons and valves occupy the same space at different points in the cycle — this typically results in valves colliding with pistons, bending valves, and often damaging the piston crowns and cylinder head in the process.
Signs it might have happened
- The engine suddenly stops and won't restart, often following a period of rattling
- The engine turns over but doesn't fire — it may sound unusually free or "loose"
- A loud bang or clatter immediately before the engine stopped

Don't attempt to restart the engine repeatedly — if the chain has snapped, further attempts to start it won't help and can occasionally add to the damage. Have the vehicle recovered rather than driven, and get it assessed properly.
