VAG 1.6 & 2.0 TDI Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement

Don't leave your 1.6 or 2.0 TDI's timing belt until it becomes an expensive engine repair. Our complete fixed-price package replaces the belt, tensioner and water pump together — manual and DSG models covered.

Which vehicles does this cover?

This is a distinct job from our VAG 2.0 TSI/TFSI petrol timing chain service — both the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI diesel engines use a conventional external timing belt, not a chain, and need replacing on a mileage/age interval before they fail. Suitable for many 2008–2021 1.6 & 2.0 TDI models. Registration/VIN confirmation required before booking, as the price and parts can vary by exact engine code.

VW Golf / Passat / Tiguan2.0 TDI
VW Touran / Caddy2.0 TDI
VW Golf / Polo / Caddy1.6 TDI
Audi A3 / A4 / A52.0 TDI
Audi A31.6 TDI
Audi Q32.0 TDI
Škoda Octavia / Superb / Yeti2.0 TDI
Škoda Octavia / Fabia / Rapid1.6 TDI
SEAT Leon / Altea / Ateca2.0 TDI
SEAT Leon / Ibiza1.6 TDI

Not sure which engine you've got, or driving the petrol TSI/TFSI instead? See our 2.0 TSI/TFSI timing chain page, or send us your registration and we'll confirm before you book.

Signs your 1.6 or 2.0 TDI timing belt needs attention

  • A squeaking or ticking noise from the front of the engine
  • Coolant loss or visible weeping from the water pump area
  • You're not sure when the belt was last replaced, or it's approaching its mileage/age interval
  • In the worst case, sudden failure with no prior warning — a snapped belt on this engine causes serious internal damage

Why we replace the water pump at the same time

The water pump on these engines is driven by the same timing belt system and sits in a position that's only accessible once the belt is off. Replacing it at the same time avoids paying for the labour twice, and removes a second common failure point from the equation — a much more sensible approach than replacing the belt alone and hoping the pump holds out.

Our replacement process

  1. Registration/VIN confirmation of your exact 1.6 or 2.0 TDI specification.
  2. Fixed price confirmed before any work begins.
  3. Timing belt, tensioner, idler(s) and water pump replaced with correctly specified components.
  4. Auxiliary belt replaced and fresh correct-specification coolant added.
  5. Full diagnostic check.
  6. Road test and final quality check before collection.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 1.6 or 2.0 TDI timing belt replacement cost?
From £482.50 + VAT (£579.00 inc. VAT), covering the timing belt kit, water pump, auxiliary belt, coolant and a 12-month parts & labour warranty. Registration/VIN confirmation is required to confirm your exact engine and fit before booking.
Is this the same as the 2.0 TSI/TFSI timing chain service?
No — this is a different job for a different engine. The 2.0 TDI diesel uses an external timing belt on a mileage/age replacement interval; the 2.0 TSI/TFSI petrol uses an internal timing chain that's only replaced when it shows signs of wear. See the TSI/TFSI timing chain page →
Do you offer finance on this repair?
Yes — Payment Assist is available, subject to status. See payment options →
