Which vehicles does this cover?
The EA888 2.0-litre TSI/TFSI engine has been used across the Volkswagen Group since the mid-2000s, through several engine generations. Our £999.00 fixed price applies to Gen 3 engines — the most common generation we see. If your vehicle turns out to be an earlier or later generation, we'll confirm a fixed price for that specification before you book, at no extra cost to check.
Registration/VIN confirmation required before booking — this confirms your exact engine generation so you're not caught out by an awkward application. Send us your registration and we'll confirm before you book.
Signs of EA888 timing chain wear
- A rattling noise from the front of the engine, particularly noticeable on cold start-up
- Engine management light with camshaft/crankshaft timing correlation fault codes
- Rough running, hesitation or reduced power
- In advanced cases, difficulty starting or the engine failing to start
Why the EA888 chain wears
Across several generations of this engine, the hydraulic chain tensioner design has been prone to wearing faster than the chain itself. As tensioner pressure drops, the chain develops slack, timing accuracy is affected, and the noise and fault codes above start to appear. Left unaddressed, it can lead to the chain jumping timing or, in severe cases, contact between valves and pistons — a significantly more expensive repair than a timing chain replacement.
Our replacement process
- Diagnostic check to confirm the timing chain as the cause and identify your exact EA888 generation and specification.
- Fixed quote confirmed before any work begins.
- Timing chain, tensioner and guides replaced with correctly specified components.
- Full timing verification to confirm correct cam/crank alignment.
- Oil and filter change, plus a check for related contributing issues.
- Road test and final quality check before collection.
