How it differs from a conventional cambelt
A traditional timing belt sits externally at the front of the engine, driven dry and typically replaced on a fixed mileage or time interval as routine maintenance. A wet belt, by contrast, runs inside the engine's timing cover, submerged in engine oil. Manufacturers adopted this design partly to reduce friction and improve fuel economy, since the belt runs cooler and with less resistance when lubricated.
Why that creates a different problem
- The belt material is designed to tolerate oil immersion, but it still degrades over time and mileage
- As it breaks down, fragments don't fall harmlessly to the floor — they circulate through the oil system
- Those fragments can block the oil pump pickup, starving the engine of lubrication
