Signs your 2.4 D-4D timing chain needs attention
- A rattling or slapping noise from the front of the engine, particularly on cold start-up
- Engine management light with a camshaft/crankshaft timing correlation fault code
- Rough running, hesitation or a noticeable loss of power
- In advanced cases, the chain jumping timing causes serious internal engine damage
A brief rattle for a second or two on a cold start can be normal tensioner behaviour on this engine — a persistent or worsening rattle is the sign worth acting on. Some early 8th-gen cars also had a factory alignment issue between the injection-pump and crank sprockets, which Toyota addressed with a revised damper part under warranty.
